The novel-consisting of letters-was written in 1782 in France. Love and hatred, friendship and disillusion, revenge and jealousy are all depicted in the work in different shapes and forms arriving at last to a tragic ending. Interestingly enough it is an end-of-the-twentieth century story as well.
