Ildiko Nemeth is the Founder and Artistic Director of the New Stage Theatre Company (NSTC), and the director, producer, and visionary force behind all the company’s premieres. From 1990 to 1998, Nemeth was a member of the R.S. 9 Theater Company in Budapest, touring internationally with critically acclaimed productions. In 1998 she moved to New York City. She graduated from Actor’s Studio Drama School in 2002 and started NSTC the same year.
Nemeth’s works have won notice and inspired fascination for their bold, provocative effect, achieved by juxtaposing complex, difficult themes with physical and absurdist humor. Under her leadership, the company has built a name for itself as a “daring experimental group” (Backstage) that achieves a vital theatrical expression, a “unique theatrical vision that creates wonder for mature sophisticated audiences” (New York Theatre Wire). Joe Meyers of the Connecticut Post wrote of Nemeth: “The theater artist is second to none in terms of the images she creates and the moods she spins … [creating] works of great beauty and heightened theatricality.” Ed Malin of NY Theatre Now praised her “trademark surreal theatricality,” noting that in NSTC works, “the grotesque often shakes hands with the beautiful.”
Nemeth received the 2015 NY Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Performance Art Production and has been nominated for numerous IT Awards over the years, including Outstanding Director. The IT Awards called the company’s 10th anniversary a “story of the year” in 2012, noting, “For a decade Ildiko Nemeth has been bringing her unique brand of sophisticated, inspired and startling stage craft to NYC.” In 2016 Nemeth received the prestigious Caffé Cino Fellowship, awarded to a company consistently producing outstanding work. Nemeth is thrilled to welcome audiences to the New Stage Performance Space, an artistic home for NSTC which marks the start of an exciting new phase for the company.
